Ex-French collection
Referred to as a "boli" (plural "boliw"), this fetish representing a buffalo occupies a prominent place in the ritual practices of the Mandingo region, as manifested in African art. Boliw" come in a variety of sizes, some being small and portable, while others belong to chieftaincies, initiation societies such as the Kono and Komo male initiation associations, where members progress through rituals spread over several decades, and even to state levels.
These objects, used as altars or presented during ritual dance performances, are based on revelations granted to bush genies and passed on to diviners. They incorporate active amalgams of natural and/or organic origin, known as "daliluw". These materials are arranged around an inner bamboo frame, wrapped in a white cotton cloth, then covered with layers of mud and clay. Over time, sacrificial materials accumulate on the surface of these objects, testifying to their ongoing ritual use.
