Dogon sculptures, sometimes seen as incarnations of the spirits of the deceased, are used during seasonal rituals, particularly for seeds and harvests. In parallel with Islam, the Dogon religion includes four main cults: the Lébé, focused on fertility and led by the spiritual Hogon, the Wagem, an ancestral cult under the authority of the patriarch, the Binou, dedicated to the world of spirits and guided by a specialized priest, and finally the mask society, responsible for funeral rituals.
According to Dogon cosmogony, the first ancestors, the Nommo, were bisexual deities born from water and created in the sky by Amma, the creator god. Descending to earth aboard an ark, the Nommo founded the eight Dogon lineages and passed on knowledge of weaving, blacksmithing and agriculture to their descendants.
