The Luba, also known as Baluba in Tchiluba, are a people of Central Africa. Their origins lie in Katanga, specifically in the Lubu river region, hence their name (Baluba, meaning "the Lubas"). They emerged from a secession of the Songhoy ethnic group, led by Ilunga Kalala, successor to the old king Kongolo, who has since been venerated in the form of a python. In the 16th century, they established a state organized into decentralized chiefdoms, stretching from the Kasai River to Lake Tanganyika. These chiefdoms cover small territories with no clearly defined borders, grouping together a maximum of three villages.
