Authentic Bambara Fetish
Antelope Horse
MALI
Sculpted in the late 1920s
This fetish has been in my possession since January 1972
It comes from the village of KAMALE, in the Mandingo mountains, not far from Guinea
It is covered with cowries and has been made sacred. the blood used is that of a Koba (horse antelope)
It was given to me by my hunting guide, Joseph TRAORE who got it from his father in recognition of having had his old brother treated for onchocerciasis, an endemic eye disease in his village because of a stagnant river. in the dry season, which attracted game and flies carrying this disease
