SCULPTURE of a DIGNITARY
Culture Bamoun, Cameroon
First half of the 20th century
Wood and pigments
H.: 140 cm
This large sculpture in the round shows a male figure standing with his knees bent as if to rest on a high seat. She holds in her right hand a long-spouted pipe and in her left hand, which appears to be a pestle. His neck is dressed in a three-row torc.
Its patina is crusty, enhanced with blue at the ankles highlighting its bracelets, orange at its plastron, its headgear, its handle bracelets, its toes and hands as well as at the level. eyes, and finally white to enhance his teeth.
The size of the wood takes up the stylistic characteristics of the Bamoun culture: an oval face, bulging almond eyes, wide nostrils, individualized and broad fingers.
