Antique NUPE water jar from Nigeria in terracotta. (height 37cm, diameter of neck 17cm, diameter of lower part 30 cm). Early 20th century.
The Nupe are renowned for their splendid jars with narrow necks, wide openings, rich slip and geometric decoration. The present example is decorated with an embossed brass leaf.
The base is rounded, as these pots were worn on the head using cloth rings for support. Constant use over many years has left lighter tones around the base, proof of its age. Very good condition, with light marks and wear around the neck.
Nupe water containers are among the finest examples of traditional African pottery.
