    Taino culture, Dominican Republic
    800 - 1500 AD
    H .: 19; L .: 21; Thickness: 12 cm

Terracotta amphora with a stylized heart-shaped belly, engraved decoration used for storing water and fermenting wine from "potiza", guava juice. The neck is bulbous and animated by two stylized faces holding two streamers incised with geometric patterns forming the frieze decoration which occupies the top of the paunch.
This combination of working with the material refers to the duality of Taino culture: on the one hand, the neck evokes the phallus and the conical protuberances of the bellies refer to the female breast. The two faces in relief are the figures of the twins which refer to a more conceptual duality: the two directions, good and evil and life and death.

Provenance: Private collection since the years 1950-1960, France.
