Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1882) was a French industrialist and one of the leading bronze casters of his time.

Born in Normandy, Barbedienne soon moved to Paris and ran a wallpaper store. He met Achille Collas, and together they opened a foundry in 1838. Collas had already invented a machine capable of mathematically reproducing sculptures.

The firm Collas & Barbedienne sold plaster casts of the Venus de Milo worldwide. It later devoted itself to bronze castings based on ancient models. Barbedienne’s idea was to democratize art to make it accessible, while ensuring faithful reproduction of the original works. This invention allowed him to stand out and earn a strong reputation among the sculptors of the time, such as Antonin Mercié and Paul Dubois…

He also worked on decorative objects and furniture. In 1862, he made quite an impression at the London World’s Fair with his art objects inlaid with enamel (his first recorded attempts at this technique date back to 1858).
