Early 19th century
Box and boxwood, brass strapping
Embossed paper portrait of Louis XVIII under glass
Dimensions: D. 8 (cm.)
This profile portrait of King Louis XVIII, based on the original by sculptor Auguste François Michaut, employs all the codes for representing the Bourbon return to power. The king's bust is turned to the left. The king is shown in uniform, wearing multiple symbols of power: the Orders of Saint-Louis, the Legion of Honor and the Holy Spirit.
This is an interesting testimony to royalist fervor during the Restoration.
Condition report: restoration to boxwood banding and wear.
