Louis-Ernest Barrias came from a family of artists. Louis-Ernest Barrias pursued artistic studies. After enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1858, he abandoned painting to focus on sculpture under the guidance of François Jouffroy. He won the Second Prix de Rome in 1861 for *Chryséis Returned to Her Father by Ulysses*, and went on to win the Prix de Rome in 1865, after which he was commissioned to work on the Paris Opera House. Barrias spent time at the French Academy in Rome and, upon his return to France, became one of the most promising young talents of the French school of sculpture.
