A handsome desk blotter or writing pad in lacquered sheet metal with a bronze frame in the Chinese style, decorated with gold pagoda figures on a red background. It opens to reveal a blotter forming a document holder. Late 19th century or circa 1900.
Our desk blotter is typical of these late 19th-century productions, circa 1880-1900, when ornamentalists, weary of the pastiches in vogue under the Second Empire, decided to return to the pinnacle of taste: a perfect copy of the 18th century, perfected with the technical capabilities offered by 19th-century means. At that time, Paris was at the pinnacle of good taste, illuminating French and international high society with luxury boutiques such as Escalier de Cristal, Sormani, Dasson... Our unsigned writing desk is typical of the production of these houses.
It's an ideal complement to a "pure XVIIIe" office décor, or for an interior evoking the refinement of the Belle Epoque.
Good condition, minor wear to lacquer, "period" writing inside.
