    * Catherine of Alexandria
    better known as Saint Catherine, was a virgin and martyr who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Tradition dates her birth to Alexandria and her death, at the age of eighteen, to around 307. She refused to marry Emperor Maximin II Daia, who had her beheaded. Her legend and cult spread from the East to the West, and was widely documented after the Crusades. His feast day, November 25, now gives rise to a variety of popular celebrations, including those for young brides over the age of twenty-five, known as catherinettes.
