Framed by four twisted columns adorned with a gilded fire pot, our chase is glazed. The back is lined with embroidered passementerie. It holds a bagged skull, encircled by numerous multi-colored glass ornaments and a crown topped with a cross. This insignia relic of the Company of Saint Ursula is surrounded by two ex-ossibus relics, also bagged and adorned with glassware. A phylactery indicates that the relic is in fact that of Saint Ursula, Virgin and Martyr.
She is the patron saint of young girls and clothmakers.
The pyramidal top is removable. Also on a white cushion are notable fragments of the same company of St. Ursula of Cologne, as well as the bones of St. Benedict and St. Vitalis, a first-century martyr whom Emperor Nero had the dreadful idea of burying alive.
On the back is a religious wax seal, marking the former ownership of this great hunting ground.
South German work, late 19th century.
Dimensions: 70 cm long by 41 cm and 57 cm high.
Very good condition
