Pretty Fretwork Tray in black and gold lacquered boiled cardboard Napoleon III Style. The scalloped top is decorated with golden foliage patterns on the edge and base, and painted flowers in the center.
In the 1850s and 1860s, black was the color of luxury, it is reminiscent of ebony and lacquerware from the Far East. The bourgeoisie bought furniture and objects in papier-mâché made from boiled, lacquered and gilded cardboard, a technique which made it possible to obtain, at a lower cost, sets of shine and complex shapes.
