BIOGRAPHY:
Lapie The young Jean, brother of Lapie The elder Nicolas Alexandre, born around 1734, became a MASTER in Paris on July 31, 1762. He operated a workshop and a store on rue de Charenton where many upholsterers were supplied. Jean Lapie has always brought a lot of diversity and fantasy to his works. He made all kinds of furniture in floral marquetry, mosaic tiles, gray wood, Macassar ebony, rosewood, mahogany and varnished in the Chinese style. In his home there were chests of drawers topped with a cupboard, others in corners, transformation tables, screens trimmed with silver-plated brass... The upholsterer Maugé, rue Saint André des Arts, bought several works from him with hinged doors on the backs of books, including a curious “secretary chest of drawers”, disguised as a bookcase. Tested by the Revolution, this cabinetmaker went bankrupt on July 1, 1790. The most striking piece on which I noted his stamp: J. LAPIE, is a small coffee table, of a very graceful shape, in violet wood with lemon tree fillets.
