Elegant Louis XVI Period Chest of Drawers, Stamped by Louis Moreau, in Mahogany and

It opens with 5 Drawers on 3 Rows. Three Drawers in the Upper Part and Two Wide Drawers
in the lower part.

It rests on 4 tapered and fluted legs. Uprights with grooves. Drawers and side panels underlined with
of Blackened Wood.

Very nice ornamentation of original gilded and chiselled bonzes, very nice gilding. Oak frame.

Topped with a Grey Veined White Marble Top.

Stamped several times by the famous cabinetmaker LOUIS MOREAU.

Louis Moreau (1740-1791) Cabinetmaker-sculptor. Paris. Master on September 27, 1764. He employed skilled workers such as the cabinetmakers Bircklé, Foullet, Topino, the founders Guinaud and Cottin and the gilders Prégermain and Fagard.

Louis Moreau worked for a rich aristocratic clientele as well as for the superintendence of the Menus-Plaisirs, the royal administration specifically in charge of the organization of court festivities and ceremonies, which commissioned him several times during the reign of Louis XVI to create pieces of furniture.
Since his accession to the master's degree, on September 27, 1764, Moreau practiced on rue de l'Echelle-Saint-Honoré, under the sign "A la descente des Tuileries". He had taken over the business of his colleague Denis Genty. If his work was very diversified as proven by a label found on one of his pieces of furniture with the mention "Fait et tient Magasin [de différents meubles tels que] Secrétaire, Armoire, Commode, Bibliothèque, Bureau à cylindre, Table à jouer, Table Anglaise d'Acajou, et tout ce qui concerne la Menuiserie et l'Ebénisterie à Paris", Moreau seems however to have had a clear predilection for half-moon chests of drawers with two large drawers on the front and lateral leaves.
A Transitional chest of drawers with a double recess stamped L. MOREAU from the Kress collection is currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Very high quality Louis XVI period furniture, circa 1770.
