Magnificent curule-shaped work table in mahogany and mahogany veneer from the Empire-Consulate period.
Elegant ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronze, the top rising to reveal a mirror and several compartments.
The antique X-shaped base, joined by a spacer, and resting on a base finished with casters.

This table derives from the "work table" delivered in 1810 by Jacob Desmalter et Cie for the games room of the Empress Marie Louise at the Grand Trianon: "A work table in burr mahogany, the top rising, garnished with a mirror with a gilded bronze frame the top internally lined with a tablet covered in green morocco and rising (…) the X-shaped legs are rounded, decorated with gilded bronze capitals as well as the hooves of the feet which rest on casters. Asking price 600F, paid 575F." (D. Ledoux Lebard, Le Grand Trianon, Tome I, Paris, 1975, pp.42-43).

Jacob Desmalter and his father Georges, under the Jacob et Cie brand (Jacob D Rue Meslée stamp) will deliver several similar tables for the use of the Empress for the other palaces, sometimes called "writing table" for Compiègne, or " drawing table" for Fontainebleau and the Tuileries, or even "work table".

The model exists with an entirely metal base such as that of the table sold by Sotheby's Paris, April 28, 2009, lot 143.

    Very good state of preservation.

    Empire period.

Work of the company Jacob Desmalter et Cie (association between Georges Jacob and his son François Honoré Georges Jacob Desmalter between 1803 and 1813).
