A Mazarin desk adorned with violetwood marquetry. It features four drawers framing a drop-down panel designed to hold a box for storing precious objects.
The top, with its stepped design, features geometric motifs of circles and semicircles forming rosettes. It reveals three small drawers and a false drawer serving as a writing surface.
This elegant piece of substantial dimensions features a twisted base with eight columns and crossbars made of solid Rio rosewood. This wood was particularly rare and sought-after in the early 18th century; it is found almost exclusively in veneers and very rarely in solid wood, given its very high cost and the difficulties involved in importing it.
Date: early 18th century. Two locks have been replaced.
