Extremely rare mahogany "à l'Antique" knitting table from the very late 18th, early 19th century.
Resting on three curved legs joined by a wrought-iron brace, simulating an Etruscan Athenian.
A superb ram's head, carved in the round, sits on each leg, holding a canephore vase.
Sophisticated carved hooves rest on the floor.
The belt is adorned with ebony marquetry buires, each surrounded by a rhombus.
This specific motif, like a Jean-Joseph Chapuis signature, is often found on the cabinetmaker's furniture. It can be found on seats, consoles, pedestal tables and chests of drawers.

This elegant knitting machine, in excellent condition and entirely original, can be fitted with custom-made marble to create a superb Athenian saddle. Quotation on request.

Stamped CHAPUIS on the inside of the belt and on the inside of one foot.

Consulate period, between 1798 and 1803
