Italy, late 19th century
Our work represents the Duomo of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence from the east, on a clear day and without many crowds.
A souvenir of the Grand Tour
The iconography of Florentine architecture is a theme rarely addressed by this format of works among Italian artists of the 19th century. Intended for the English and French, mainly, these small gouaches were intended to be taken to neighboring countries, testifying to the trip made to Italy. There is a whole production linked to this trip such as small bronzes, marble busts etc. Our gouache is particularly interesting due to the use of the format and the simplicity of the composition which make it very romantic.
