PHARMACY POT or CHEVRETTE
Venice, Italy
Late 16th - early 17th century
Earthenware
H. 23.5; L. 23 cm
(hair and slight firing defect)
This Venetian medicine jar, known as a chevrette, is made of majolica with blue monochrome decoration on a blue background known as "A Berettino". It is ovoid in shape on a pedestal, with a circular pouring spout and a double-handled ribbon handle. The body is punctuated with a cartouche reading "S D SVGO D LIMO" - referring to the name of the contents.
The chevrettes were prized by apothecaries and pharmacies, who kept syrups or oils in them.
