Pair of torchlight candlesticks in gilded bronze (chiseled bronze) in matte and shiny. Quiver-shaped model with smooth stem decorated with palmettes on the bottom and base decorated with trophies allegories of noble sciences: war, geography and botany. Under the bobeche, a frieze decorated with butterflies and rosettes. Our candle holders are entirely made of bronze (no brass part) and composed of 6 independent parts assembled on a threaded rod. Empire period work by Claude Galle or Thomire Duterme.
Our torches have many similarities in spirit with other models formally identified with Claude Galle and Thomire present in public collections. We think it is more likely Claude Galle.
Claude Galle (1759-1815), bronze maker and foundry-engraver, became a master in 1786 and was active on rue Vivienne, supplied the Crown Furniture Guard under Louis XVI but also and especially under the Empire. In particular, it makes deliveries to the châteaux of Trianons, Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, Compiègne and the Palais des Tuileries.
Our torches are a beautiful model of the quality of those that could be found in the small apartments of an imperial residence.
Very good condition: no dents, accidents or deformation. Superb mercury gilding in matte and shiny redone (at the beginning of the 20th century) therefore in perfect condition.
