Sculpture: a glazed earthenware roof finial depicting a local dignitary in traditional costume, wearing a tricorn hat and frock coat atop his barrel—a classic figure of Norman folk art, a jovial and timeless character that is particularly sought after.   The piece features remarkable detail, from the buttons on the jacket and the yellow decorative friezes to the head sculpted on the lower base. It bears the signature of the Barfleur Pottery dated 1991.  The Barfleur Pottery, located in the heart of the Cotentin Peninsula in the Manche department, is a true institution of Norman ceramics; its history is part of the long lineage of the region’s pottery workshops, which benefited from rich clay deposits. The workshop has become known for its roof finials, which—beyond their highly decorative appearance—originally signaled the wealth of the owners of granite houses at the tops of their roofs; historically, the figure of a person seated on a barrel (often a drinker or a local dignitary holding a mug) served as a visual sign indicating that a building housed a bar, an inn, or a tavern.   Each finial is entirely handcrafted, combining stamping and modeling techniques, before being coated with a lead-based glaze that yields these rich, contrasting shades of brown and bright yellow after firing.
