This Art Nouveau stained-glass window depicting clematis was hung above a door or window adorned with a larger stained-glass window. It was created by Jacques Gruber (unsigned but part of a batch signed by Gruber), one of the greatest master glassmakers of the early 20th century.
Jacques Gruber (1870-1936) was one of the founders of the Nancy School. He established French stained-glass art, notably by daringly layering acid-etched glass, thus giving depth and clarity to the motifs.
The flowers are made of double-glazed, acid-etched glass, and the leaves are painted with grisaille. The entire piece is set in lead. Two painted pieces have been remade.
