Claude Schurr is one of the major representatives of the so-called "synthetic figuration," a style stemming from Cubism and Fauvism that emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War.
He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in the studios of Untersteller and S'Abatte.
He won the second Antral Prize in 1947, the Antral Prize in 1948, and the National Prize in 1949. That same year, he also received a scholarship from the Casa Velázquez.
From 1947 onward, he exhibited in Philadelphia and participated in all the major salons: Salon d'Automne, Salon des Moins de Trente Ans (Salon of Artists Under Thirty), Salon de Mai, Salon de Comparaisons, Salon des Tuileries, the São Paulo Biennial in 1953, and the École de Paris in 1957.
