This painting represents a flood scene probably in the second half of the 19th century. The view of the mountains and the type of house make us think of a landscape near Switzerland. Perhaps it is about the big flood of Chamonix with the big flood of the Arve in 1852. The scene is reminiscent of a painting representing the "Chamouny flood of 1853" which was painted by Claude Hugard de la Tour (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry).
The painting is not signed. But the style is reminiscent of the classical style of the landscape painters of the Second Empire, with the finesse of the light, the representation of the vegetation and the beautiful colors of the sky. The tumult of the overflowing water is also very well rendered and in a very fine way. This makes this painting a beautiful post-romantic image of nature unleashed threatening man and his frail wooden dwellings on the water's edge. A small amusing detail: on the house in the foreground on the left is nailed an owl or a bat which was to ward off the spell!
