Son and pupil of an engraver, Amédée also studied with Baron Gros and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. He won the second Prix de Rome for historical landscapes in 1821 and moved to Rome. Bourgeois then devoted himself to depicting historical scenes and, above all, Roman and Neapolitan landscapes, which he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1822 and 1833. His works are held in the Beaux-Arts museums of Lyon, Angers, Lille and Versailles (Musée Lambinet).
Our painting depicts ancient ruins, possibly thermal baths near Rome. Shades of beige/brown and skilfully arranged chiaroscuro add to the charm of this French neo-classical painting.
