    Beautiful work by Avignon painter Pierre Grivolas, depicting a herd of goats in a Provence landscape. The scene most likely takes place near Mont-Ventoux (Sault) in the Vaucluse region, where the artist regularly painted.

    A pupil of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1864 and 1882. A friend of the Félibrige poets, he devoted himself to translating Provençal and Comtadine traditions. In 1878, he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Avignon, a position he held until his death in 1906. Considered the leader of the Nouvelle Ecole d'Avignon, his open-air teaching and virtuoso use of color inspired many of his future students.

    From November 2008 to January 2009, the Fondation Louis Vouland in Avignon organized a major retrospective of over a hundred of the artist's works, for which a book has been published. The work presented is unpublished and does not appear in this book.
