    Gustave Vidal (1895-1966)

    "Small Port in the Mediterranean"

    Oil on canvas,
    Signed lower right,

Provenance: Avignon Auction House, December 10, 2012

A beautiful, luminous, and high-contrast work by the painter Gustave Vidal depicting a small, bustling fishing port in the Mediterranean, most likely in Corsica, where the artist loved to paint his subjects.

The artist perfectly captured the different shades of color and the interplay of light on a summer's day in the Mediterranean through skillful brushstrokes and masterful impasto.

The painter also paid particular attention to the details of the buildings and the movement of the sea.

A student at the Avignon School of Fine Arts under the direction of the painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students, including Gustave Vidal, to paint outdoors. He was influenced by the new Avignon school and abstract painters.

His distinctive style blends palette knife techniques with pictorial stylization. He received numerous awards early in his career and exhibited worldwide.

Dimensions: 46 x 55 cm unframed and 54.5 x 64 cm with its original wooden frame.
