Jan Kobell the Elder (1756-1833) was a painter and engraver from a family of Dutch artists from Rotterdam. He was active in Rotterdam in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jan Kobell the Elder signed his name with a monogram in beautiful, recognizable handwriting, "JK."
He had a brother, Hendrick Kobell (1751-1779), a marine painter who settled in Germany. Jan Kobell the Elder is sometimes confused with his nephew Jan Kobell the Younger (1778-1814), a landscape and animal painter, and the latter's son Jan Kobell III (1800-1838), who was an animal painter.
