Auguste Pégurier (1856-1936)
"Farmhouse in the Hills of Saint-Tropez"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Old storage label on the back of the stretcher.
A beautiful and rare work by the painter Auguste Pégurier, nicknamed "the first painter of Saint-Tropez," depicting a Provençal farmhouse in the hills above Saint-Tropez.
Like the Impressionist masters, the artist possesses a complete mastery of light and sunlit atmospheres. His painting is characterized by vibrant touches of color that capture the light of Provence and express a poetic quality in his works.
A student of Cormon and Carolus-Duran at the Académie Julian in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1880 onward. Not finding sufficient recognition in Paris, he decided to settle in Saint-Tropez, where he led a life of financial ease as a vineyard owner. During the interwar period, his work was exhibited again in Paris from 1924 to 1935.
These works are held at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Musée de l’Annonciade in Saint-Tropez.
Dimensions: 49 x 80 cm unframed and 64 x 94 cm with its giltwood frame.
