*Charles Tranchand was born on August 9, 1884, in Angers. A student of Fernand Lutscher (1843-1923), he then trained in the studio of Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) in Paris, and at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which allowed him to discover the Impressionists, as well as Van Gogh and Gauguin.

Returning to his native Anjou, he forged friendships with the local artistic community: Berjole, Georges Gobo, Louis-Charles Morin, Adrien Recouvreur, and Willy Landelle. He was already known as the painter of old Angers, capturing all the picturesque details of its old streets and monuments, rendering them with vigorous engraving strokes.

In 1923, Charles Tranchand joined the Guild of Angers Artists, formed around André Bruel. He was a favorite artist of the Hirvyl advertising agency. He also worked for the Tourist Office and illustrated many works by Angers writers: René Bazin's *Paysages et pays d’Anjou* (1926), Mathilde Alanic's *Vieilles rues, vieux logis, la Cité* (1931), and *Angers*. Walk around a cathedral by Marc Leclerc (1944), in Angers after the turmoil of Canon Civrays (1945). Towards the end of his life, in 1944, he was finally appointed professor of painting at the School of Fine Arts and inaugurated, in the spring of 1953, the first engraving course created at the school. His son Georges Tranchand (1913-2003) was also an important artist in Angers.
