He was a pupil of Félix Cottavoz in Grenoble and Isidore Pils in Paris. In 1868, his first submission to the Paris Salon (Jeune fille à sa toilette and Portrait de jeune homme) was accepted. He was a regular participant until 1885. After graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts, he returned to Grenoble to devote himself to his art.
Inspired by the Flemish and Dutch masters he began copying at the Grenoble museum, he made a trip to Holland in 1887. He frequented the circle of painters who met on Sundays in Proveysieux. He lost his sight in 1918.
Édouard d'Apvril is buried in Grenoble's Saint-Roch cemetery.
