Chinese painting depicting He Xiangu, reproduced three times but with a different attribute: top lotus flower, bottom left fly hunting and bottom right lotus flower again, each time surrounded by a disciple, the one praying on the right, the one on the left seems to be bringing him a bowl. Pigments on linen or hemp, 19th century. He Xiangu or Ho Hsien-ku, "Immortal Maiden He", is an immortal Taoist, member of the Eight Immortals group. She is depicted holding a lotus symbolizing spiritual fulfillment, and sometimes also a sheng, a peach of immortality, a wooden ladle or a leaflet, a religious accessory. She is sometimes presented as a disciple of Lü Dongbin, and Ming theatrical and literary works have imagined a romantic intrigue between the two. Tradition has it that a Tang dynasty woman who devoted herself to celibacy dedicated herself to the Dao. She is said to have lived during the reigns of Wu Zetian and Zhongzong . Wu Zetian is said to have asked to meet her, which she may or may not have accepted, depending on the version. A "Song" book makes her a contemporary of general Di Qing (1008-1057), to whom she predicted victory.
