Louis Félix Bigaux, Knight of the Legion of Honor, a genre, flower, and landscape painter, and a student of Delfosse and Defay, was born in Lessay, Manche. He was active in Paris at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries and was a member of the Society of French Artists from 1889. This bouquet of dahlias is presented in a cut crystal vase, resting on a pedestal. The painting's free-flowing composition is full of cheerfulness; the white and slightly pink dahlias illuminate the whole scene. In the past, country gardens were frequently planted with dahlias, gladioli, lilies, and other flowers. These plants were often found around the vegetable garden, beautifying it and intended for the lady of the house to bring flowers into her home. The painting is enhanced by a beautiful Louis XV-style gilt frame from the mid-20th century.
