The gleaners are inspired by the painting of millet (see last photo) who wanted to show:
Women embodying the rural proletariat. They are allowed to pass quickly before sunset, in the harvested fields to pick up 1 by 1 the neglected ears.
The 3 women represent the 3 phases of the repetitive and grueling movement imposed by this harsh task: bending down, picking up, getting up.
