Porcelain and bisque statuette of a nymph turning the pages of a book. Workshop of Ernst Wahliss, Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1900s
Ernst Wahliss was born in 1836. He was one of Vienna's leading retailers of porcelain and ceramics. His Vienna store opened in 1863. His business was so successful that he was able to open another store in London.
In 1894, Ernst Wahliss decided to take over the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz (now in the Czech Republic). He renamed the factory Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik.
Ernst died in 1900. Two years later, his sons Hans and Erich bought 600 molds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Factory in Vienna. Using these molds, they began to produce reproductions of Vienna porcelain.
In 1905, the company was renamed Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss.
The base of the statuette, depicting a large book whose pages the nymph seems to be dreamily turning, bears two dates: May 20, 1876 (or 1878?) and May 20, 1903.
Total height 12cm. Base dimensions 8x16cm
Good overall condition, with 3 cracks under the base, one of which is through, which do not compromise the solidity of the piece.
Available for collection in Montpellier, Avignon, Marseille and surrounding areas, and can be shipped in very careful packaging.
