Beautiful bust of Marie Francois SADi CARNOT (1837-1894) President of the French Republic.
Bust in Sèvres porcelain cookie, signed by the sculptor Henri Chapu, stamped by the Manufacture de Sèvres and dated 1890.
    Sèvres blue enameled counter base.

    Sadi Carnot
Born in Limoges on August 11, 1837, died in Lyon on June 25, 1894. He was President of the Republic from December 3, 1887 until his death.
He completed his higher education at the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, before becoming an engineer in Haute-Savoie. Involved in Republican politics, he became deputy for Côte-d'Or, then prefect of Seine-Inférieure, under-secretary of state, then minister of public works, as well as minister of finance. He was also vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies and chairman of the Budget Committee.
Once president, Carnot was faced with a strong challenge to republican institutions, with the rise of anti-parliamentarianism, Boulangisme and anarchist attacks. It was at this time that the Panama scandal broke, aimed at creating a certain ministerial instability. His term of office was also marked by the centenary of the French Revolution and the Paris Universal Exhibition.
He was stabbed to death by the anarchist Sante Geronimo Caserio in Lyon following the passage of laws against anarchism.
