The crocodile is a sacred animal. It is believed to shelter the souls of ancestors. It is also associated with the water cycle: it reappears from its lair after spending long months in hibernation as soon as the monsoon rains arrive.
Note the magnificent work of the blacksmiths who cast this piece in bronze using the lost-wax technique.
