Javanese bronze, most likely representing the Bodhisattva Manjushri, Indonesia, Java, 9th century.
In Javanese iconography, the crescent behind his head is typical, particularly for Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri; a comparable Javanese stone example is preserved at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
He wears his double sacred chain, crossed over his chest, and, of course, the Prajñāpāramitā sutra resting on his lotus.
Beautiful green patina, with remaining gilding on the face and the crescent.
H 7 cm x W 4 cm x D 2.5 cm
Weight: 106 grams
