Peaceful and contemplative form of the four-armed Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara Chaturbhuja or Sadaksari, in gilded bronze.
He is seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, his main hands in namaskaramudra, one of the secondary hands holding a bhodi bead, taken from the sacred tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. His serene face displays a compassionate expression, his gaze directed toward the world, his hair carefully gathered in a bun beneath a five-pointed diadem surmounted by the head of Amitabha.
China, 19th century.
