Cameroon: beautiful bronze sculpture with brown patina signed EA Leroy

Emile Leroy is a well-traveled artist: in 1923, he joined Jean Boucher's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. This training gave him a taste for, and mastery of, clay modeling and plaster casting.
In 1927, he won his first travel grant, followed by several others that took him to Spain, Africa and Martinique.
In 1930, he left for the Congo and Brazzaville: on the spot, he procured clay and worked on private commissions, enabling him to support himself (the grant being limited): he created numerous busts typical of local ethnic groups.
In 1932, on his way back to France, he stopped off in Cameroon; he returned with the figure of our Cameroonian, a plaster cast of which is now in a private collection.
