At night, in the open field. Faust and Mephistopheles galloping on black horses", Goethe's text reads. "Plains, mountains and valleys, The race to the abyss, Faust and Mephistopheles galloping on two black horses", carries scene XVIII of the score of The Damnation. The six lines exchanged by the two characters during this nocturnal ride, which evoke witchcraft, become for Berlioz the crucial moment, invented by the composer, at the end of which the damned hero is dragged down to hell. Berlioz spares no expense in the effects: a haunting string rhythm evokes the infernal cavalcade, mingled with a chorus of peasants whose two horses disturb the hymns. The "hideous monsters" and "great birds of the night", the "dancing skeletons" are illustrated by the low notes of trombones accompanied by bassoons, clarinets, ophicleides and tubas. Ever sarcastic, Mephisto, as he unwittingly drags him towards the abyss, advises the frightened Faust: "Think of saving his life and laugh at the dead!" The fall into the abyss is accompanied by a silence all the more striking for having been prepared by a progression of all the orchestra's forces towards the tutti fortissimo.
