Beautiful gilt bronze Napoleon Bonaparte on his prancing horse crossing the Great St. Bernard.

According to tradition, the general is depicted as "calm on a spirited horse", even though he crossed the pass on a mule. The rearing animal lends dynamism to the composition, further enhanced by Bonaparte's grandiloquent gesture, draped in an ample coat. The victorious general, with his idealized face, looks at the viewer and shows him the direction to follow, the political third way he sought to impose between the royalists and the republicans.

This fine sculpture was inspired by the famous painting by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825).

It commemorates the victorious crossing of the Grand Saint-Bernard pass in May 1800 by the reserve army led by the First Consul, the first stage in his triumphant reconquest of Italy. With great audacity, Bonaparte surprised everyone by crossing a pass that was reputed to be impassable in spring. He revived the feats of the great captains of the past: Hannibal, who crossed the Alps with his elephants in 218 during the Second Punic War, and Charlemagne, in his turn, in 773, in his fight against the Lombards. Even before Napoleon's victories of Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland and Wagram, the work places Bonaparte's name among those of history's greatest conquerors.
