Large statue by Robert Leris, dated 1981
A decorator by trade, he devoted himself to sculpture in 1975. A close friend of César and Tinguely, he, like them, used salvaged iron. Sheet metal, fragments of car bodies, exhaust pipes, bumpers, piled up in the back of his studio, were chosen according to the desired volume or shape, then welded together. Far from being crude, they are rich in details, often unexpected, but always wonderfully executed. A figurative and phantasmagorical work, evoking the power of mechanical devices, fragile beings in armor, on the verge of balance. Thanks to his mastery of technique and the balance of volumes, Leris expressed fragility as well as heaviness. The expression of his figures, their faces, and their outstretched hands are a common denominator throughout his work. His sculptures give the impression of time suspended, as if petrified in movement. He is held in numerous public and private collections in Bordeaux.
