The Buddha is depicted seated in the Sattvaparyanka position on a high octagonal pedestal, his right leg bent over his left leg, his right hand touching the ground with his fingertips in the gesture of taking the Earth as witness (Bumisparsa Mudra), and his left hand placed in his lap, the palm facing outwards. This gesture symbolizes the victory of the Awakened One over Mara, the prince of desires and the personification of death. The Awakened One is dressed in samgathi, the monastic habit with the right shoulder uncovered. The face is characterized by large almond-shaped eyes with closed eyelids, the thin and straight nose overhangs a small mouth with a wide smile, a classic image of Lao statuary. The ears have lobes distended by the weight of the ornaments that the Blessed One used to wear as a prince. The skull is surmounted by the usnisa in the shape of a lotus bud.

The art of Laos was strongly influenced by its two powerful neighbors, the Kingdom of Siam and the Khmer Empire. It was not until the 14th century that a resolutely original art appeared in Laos with the creation of the Kingdom of Lan Xang.
