Beauty and its fragility, as paths to spirituality.
Two angels and a connecting gallery make up this piece. Our sculpted worshippers face each other on either side of the Altar. Kneeling and absorbed in prayer, they are carried by Grace, here represented by the Cloud, which traditionally manifests the presence of the Most High.
The gallery, an assembly of three distinct elements, is richly crafted and crowned with a crown.
The said crown simultaneously evokes the Messiah-King and the Holy Crown of Thorns.
These elements, as well as the angels, are made of molded, carved, and gilded wood. The angels measure 57 cm high by 40 cm long, and the accompanying gallery 66 cm high by 60 cm wide.
Note accidents, wormholes, and numerous missing parts. A 17th-century work that remains touching, despite—or perhaps thanks to—the ravages of time.
