A very fine and rare pair of Klismos "secret" stools in mahogany and mahogany veneer, from the Empire-Consulate period.
Also known as "Etruscan" stools, with their four outward-curving legs, these Klismos stools feature an antique-style backrest finished with a scroll that conceals a long secret drawer on each side, carved with a rose on the front.
Very fine work by cabinetmaker Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848), whose stamp is still visible under one of the two stools.

This beautiful pair of secret stools has just been restored by an art cabinetmaker.
With new tapestry and horsehair upholstery.

Directoire-Consulat period, 1800-1810.

Stamped DEMAY RUE DE CLÉRY, the stamp used by the Master cabinetmaker from the Revolution onwards, replacing the one used under Louis XVI: IBB DEMAY.
