Pair of Louis XIV style cane armchairs. Late 19th century.

Pair of armchairs in natural beechwood, molded and carved with foliate and floral motifs, with cane seats and backs and removable velvet cushions for protection and comfort. This model draws inspiration from Regency style pieces, particularly those made by chair makers like the Cresson family. The overall structure and ornamentation are still influenced by the Louis XIV style, notably the "H" shaped stretcher positioned parallel to the seat rails and the inverted console shape of the front and rear legs. This latter design is an extension of the "sheep's bone" style, belonging to the Louis XIII style, but here it features moldings, small carvings, and elaborate scrollwork.

The distinctive feature of this model is its low back, reflecting a trend that emerged during the Regency period towards lighter, more mobile armchairs. This pair of armchairs is traditionally constructed with pegged joinery and a lovely wood patina. They date from the late 19th or early 20th century. They are in good, sturdy condition. The caning on the seats shows some wear, but this is protected by velvet cushions, which are also in good condition.
