Beautiful late 18th/early 19th-century ceremonial armchair in richly carved and gilded beech. It features a rectangular, slightly backward-sloping "crosse" backrest, straight armrests with cuffs resting on curved uprights with rectangular stops, saber-shaped back legs and front legs carved in the shape of cornucopias. The ornamental repertoire - laurel branches, palmettes, rosettes, acanthus leaves and florets - is fully in keeping with the aesthetics of this transitional period. The belts adorned with clasps reinforce this stylistic filiation, evoking the productions of the period's major cabinetmakers, notably Pierre-Benoît Marcion, Pierre-Antoine Bellangé and Jacob Desmalter.
The cornucopia foot motif is particularly characteristic, referring back to Georges Jacob's designs of the late 18th century, where it frequently appears in the arm brackets.
The armchair thus reflects a formal dialogue between neoclassical tradition and the imperial taste of the early 19th century.
    Directoire period -Consulate, 1795-1804
Perfect stability without reinforcement. Worn and missing gilding.
    Belt strapped, not verified.
